Volunteer Opportunity

The Burnaby Festival of Learning is created by community, for community. Through vibrant and thought-provoking events, the Festival provides attendees of all ages with opportunities to join, play, question, and explore virtual and in-person experiences that celebrate the exciting initiatives and innovative ideas that Burnaby community members and artists have to offer.

The Festival requires volunteers to assist with the Burnaby Soundwalk, an in-person event at Deer Lake on Sunday, May 8th. There are two six-hour shifts available. One is from 8:30am-2:30pm and the other is from 2:30pm-8:30pm. The Soundwalk is a self-guided walk with listening prompts and a map created by local musician Martin Reisle.

We are looking for assistance to set-up (early shift) and tear-down (late shift) this event, as well as to have some greeters and way finders on-site to hand out maps, direct traffic and answer any questions from the general public about the event.

Hours: The event opens at 10am and closes at 6pm. Volunteers will be there from 8:30am-2:30pm OR from 2:30pm-8:30pm (or earlier).

Location: Deer Lake Park, Burnaby BC

This position is vital to the warm, welcoming, community-minded and inclusive environment of the Burnaby Festival of Learning.

The volunteer duties include:

  • Helping to set-up or pull-down signage for the various listening posts along the walk route.
  • Attending to the questions of participants of the Soundwalk by: handing out a printed map, answering basic questions and guiding people to the first listening post.

We require that all volunteers are polite, welcoming and courteous. It is very important that all Soundwalk participants feel welcome and get their questions answered. Further, all volunteers must be able to perform moderate physical duties such as carrying wooden stakes and signs to various points and hammering mounted signs on the stakes into the ground.

There will be a zoom orientation with the Festival Director and the Event Producer in advance of the event. There will also be onsite orientation and training provided.
