Eating for the Planet: What Does Eating Sustainably Mean?

The Burnaby Festival of Learning is proud to present Eating for the Planet, hosted by Lighter FoodPrint!

For any in-person events, we will be following all safety protocols for events held in a City of Burnaby facility.

When you visita restaurant, what do you consider more: health or cost? How do greenhouse gas emissions enter into your equation? In this workshop, we will examine how food choices affect climate change and how to choose more sustainable meals.

Join Lighter Foodprint for a workshop filled with interactive discussions and activities, and leave with a clear plan to reduce the carbon emissions created by your diet.

BIO

Presenter 1 – Theo Guevara

Theo is a commerce graduate from University of British Columbia where he specialized in Accounting and did a concentration in sustainability. Theo has worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, having recently passed the Chartered Professional Accountant exam. In 2020, Theo co-founded Lighter Foodprint, a non-profit organization that provides carbon assessments for menu items in restaurants. His current role involves community outreach building relationships with restaurants in the Greater Vancouver Area. He also sits on the board of Amplify and the SPARK Foundation, two non-profit organizations focused on youth empowerment

Fun facts: he is the second oldest of five kids in his family and dreams of one day moving to Norway

Presenter 2 – Isabela Ortiz

Isabela is a recent Urban Studies Graduate from SFU. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences and has worked as a research assistant for organizations such as World Wildlife Fund and SFU, and as a communications assistant for the United Nations. She currently works at Voor Urban Labs, an urban design consultancy, focusing on projects related to Urban Indigenous Peoples and Governance in Canada. At Lighter Foodprint, she volunteers as the Partnerships Coordinator, where she coordinates and manages the outreach strategies.

Fun facts: She is the clown in the family and her 2022 personal goal is getting an Irish Setter puppy.
